This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Tom Green Septet - Tipping Point

What with just about every other gig getting cancelled there is an upside. If you are going to be confined to barracks, in-between washing your hands and watching people on TV reminding you to do just that, you could take time out to catch up on your old albums or maybe check out some new stuff.

Tipping Point slots easily into the latter category although, in a blindfold test, it could easily be mistaken for an overlooked album by Mingus, Miles, Wayne Shorter... but no! - this is very much an album for today and tomorrow. A few years back I'd have sworn on The Bible (DownBeat) that this was an American band of big hitters. Well it is a band of big hitters but they are British. 


Brits indeed and firmly routed in the jazz of today. They blow freely, with imagination and yet the overall sound doesn't jar like so many of our 'contemporary' bands do.

Amazingly, the blurb describes Tom Green's compositions as "elegant and lively contemporary chamber jazz tunes with rich harmony, propulsive grooves and memorable melodies at their heart". Well, er yes, they are that but they are also a whole lot more!

The compositions and arrangements by Green are superb as are his trombone solos. Plus he's got six guys capable of matching just about anyone at home or abroad who combine to make this an absolute delight to listen to.
