This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Ellington's Nutcracker Suite, the Aussie outback, Chicago's Jazz Age Art and Aycliffe Radio

Tonight's Radio 3 in Concert at 7:30pm presents the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by David Danzmayr. The NOW can be heard performing Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite in a concert recorded during January. As the joke goes...more Ellington sugar rum cherry than Tchaikovsky sugar plum fairy!

Later in the week on Radio 3 (Saturday, midnight) Corey Mwamba's Freeness delves into improvisatory music's relationship with the Australian outback. Also featured is a duo set recorded by saxophonist Mette Rasmussen and guitarist Julien Desprez. 

Sunday evening's Shades of Black: The Art and Genius of Archibold Motley Jr (Radio 3, 6:45pm) could be interesting. This Sunday Feature documentary strand looks at an influential figure in the visual arts world - will jazz feature? Tune in to find out. 


Mike Dixon's Aycliffe Radio Jazz Time programme is broadcast at six o'clock every Sunday. Recently Ray Sams and Tony Eales have been Mike's studio guest talking about their love of jazz and the local jazz scene.
