Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music 2019

(Press release by Wesley Stephenson)

It's with great pleasure that we announce this year's Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music.

Welcome to the third edition where once again what a stunning range of events we have lined up highlighting the great diversity that Jazz and Improvisation have to offer.

As ever the Festival brings to the fore a range of exceptional Northern musicians alongside artists from the UK and many corners of the Globe.

Brodie West and Evan Cartwright join us from Toronto for a debut performance of their 'Ways' project featuring pianist Achim Kauffman from Germany, whilst 'ZU' bassist Massimo Pupillo drops in from Italy to join 'The Necks' percussionist Tony Buck from Australia. One of Denmark’s finest Julie Kjær presents her UK trio with John Edwards and Steve Noble alongside Alexander Hawkins playing solo, this double bill bringing representatives from two of the most progressive Jazz record labels Clean Feed and Intakt*. And of course 'the high priestess of psychedelic Arabic jazz’ British Bahraini brass player Yazz Ahmed is coming to Gosforth Civic Theatre.

Further debut performances come from 'Alembic' and 'Liber Musika' both brand new bands who have arranged new music in conjunction with the Sage Summer studios. French singer and now resident in North UK Francine Luce teams up with local bass legend Andy Champion for their first ever concert. An increase in new partnerships sees new venues including Ouseburn's Victoria Tunnels where Evan Parker will perform solo. 'Somersaults' join us on their nine date 'Numerology of Birdsong' album tour, and behind the scenes Manchester's Johnny Hunter will be staging a workshop with Paul Edis and the 'Early Bird Band'.

Three members of the 'Early Bird Band' will perform their Trio 'In Other Words' at Jazz Cafe, John Garner presents 'Charkie Parlour' and there's opportunity to catch rare solo guitar appearances from Bradley Johnston and Mark Williams, following an invitation from the festival Mark will perform some of his original trio compositions arranged for solo along with music from other artists.

Jazz Coop at The Globe bring Scottish pianist Richard Michael's 'History of Jazz Piano' to the mix, also from Scotland two members of the mighty 'Glasgow Improvisers' Orchestra' Raymond MacDonald and Jer Reid deliver a heady brew of sax and guitar Duo. Stuart Collingwood Trio host a late Sunday afternoon 'Jazz Social' at Charts and last but by no means least Sue Ferris presents her Quintet with some of Tyneside's most reputable musicians.

Once again, we also welcome Andy Hamilton from Durham University to deliver a series of workshops around 'The Aesthetics of Imperfection'.

Wow… what a programme of events and packed weekend we're in for!

The festival would like to thank the Arts Council of England in helping support this ambitious project. We'd also like to thank all the musicians for their performances and the many venues and partners that all work to make this a great event in the year round calendar.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Travel and Accommodation

Most venues are located within walking distance from Newcastle Central Rail Station, Newcastle Central Metro Station and Newcastle Coach Station (for Gosforth Civic Theatre you can use Metro links to Regent Centre / for Sage you may prefer Metro links to Gateshead Central or Buses / for Victoria Tunnels you may prefer Taxi or Bus - reduce you costs and carbon footprint by sharing a taxi with other festival attendees) Newcastle Central Metro Station also carries direct links to and from Newcastle Airport with a journey time of around 25 minutes. There are also many local bus services, wherever you're coming from just head for Newcastle Central Station and you can find most venues quite easily. There are many hotels and hostels available at various prices many of which are also surrounding Newcastle Central Station, we recommend the 'Sleeperz Hotel' for good accommodation at a reasonable price.
