This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: Dred Scott - Dred Scott Rides Alone

A one-man band! Albeit a digital one where, thanks to the wonders of overdubbing, Scott recorded each instrument separately to create the effect of a piano trio and, if I hadn't been wised up beforehand, I'd have sworn it was three very good musicians. He also composed seven of the eight numbers - well he would, wouldn't he?

His c.v. includes working with such luminaries as Anthony Braxton, Andrew Cyrelle, Joe Morello, Joe Henderson, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Ricky Lee Jones and the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra out in California. He was also co-founder of, I quote, the groundbreaking hip-hop jazz group Alphabet Soup.

Truly a man of many and varied talents that are well reflected on this quite absorbing album.
