Darlington Jazz Club resumes business tomorrow (Sunday 2) following a short summer break. And the first concert of the autumn season is a biggie. Trumpet powerhouse Bruce Adams will be in town to gig with multi-reeds virtuoso Al Wood. Anticipating a large crowd Darlington Jazz Club decided to secure a bigger venue for the occasion foregoing its usual Quakerhouse venue in favour of St Augustine’s along the road on Larchfield Street. What’s more, the start time will be thirty minutes later than usual at 6:30, admission on the door a bargain £6.00.
Adams (trumpet and flugelhorn) has worked with Alan Barnes for many years and, in addition, the Scot has chalked up countless gigs working with world-class musicians including Ray Bryant, Benny Carter, Al Cohn and Buddy Tate. Al Wood plays all the reeds plus trumpet and trombone! Prestigious concert engagements include working with Nat Adderley, Maynard Ferguson and Dionne Warwick. Mr Wood is known for his jazz education activities, not least at Leeds College of Music. Wood will be joined on this gig at St Augustine’s by three Leeds based musicians; Martin Longhawn, piano, Garry Jackson, double bass and drummer Tim Carter. Longhawn and Carter were recently heard by Bebop Spoken Here at a Newcastle Jazz Co-op gig as one half of the Teduloca quartet. Bassist Jackson has worked with Wood for many years and he too can boast an impeccable cv which includes appearances with Howard Alden (guitar hero to many), Guy Barker, Herb Geller and Bobby Wellins.
So, Sunday, half-past six at St Augustine’s Parish Centre (lots of on-site, free parking) is the place to be as the region’s autumn jazz season launches in style with Bruce Adams and the Al Wood Quartet.
