Juliet Kelly (vocal); Paul Edis (piano).

Some gigs go on too long, some gigs you just can't get enough of, but this early evening shot at GCT got it just right.
The duo had played a sell-out lunchtime gig at the Gala, Durham, and it wasn't being unduly optimistic to think that the Tyneside cats would do the same.
They didn't although, it has to be said that those who could get off their litter tray thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The opening I Put a Spell on You did just that to the audience. The unaccompanied first chorus held everyone, dare I say it? Spellbound!
Pitch perfect, this was a voice that could do what it wanted to with a lyric without any histrionics! The theme of the evening was on divas and family although, in truth, the two children present weren't spellbound.
Nina Simone was, of course, the diva related to the opening tune although, as a Jarrow (Jarra) lad, I always relate it to Alan Price and the Animals.
Sassy was acknowledged with 'S Wonderful, Sinatra with April in Paris, Astrid with So Nice, Billie with Nice and Mellow and Ella with Every Time we Say Goodbye.
As well as the standards, Juliet's originals, which are a part of her current CD -
reviewed by Ann Alex -. slotted in easily.
It was one of those early evening gigs that won't live with you forever but nor will it be forgotten tomorrow - or the day after or the day after that...
Lance.
PS: I'm accused and plead guilty to the charge of not acknowledging Paul Edis' contribution both as soloist and back-up man to the singer.
In my defence, yer 'onna. Mista Edis don't need nobody like me to tell them geezers who don't know how good he is to tell them how good he is. 'ere, I'll give you 'is CD and you can judge for yersel.
Yes, the accused is very light-fingered as, indeed are most of the felons that I see in the Dock. Conditional discharge.
Conditional your honour?
Yes, the condition is that Mr Edis plays at my daughter's wedding and at all of her subsequent weddings.
Case dismissed.
