A short hop from a jam session in Darlington, a ‘hello’ to Carlo, a pint from the Durham Brewery, and, entering the bustling performance space, a female voice could be heard singing the Jimmy McHugh/Dorothy Fields’ old warhorse On the Sunny Side of the Street.
First-year Evie Hill sang Don’t Get Around Much Anymore and before long alto sax wizard Dan Garel got up to play What is this thing called love? followed by…Garel pondered a moment; a blues in F, Now’s the Time. Group Theory bandmate of Garel, drummer Tristan Bacon, joined the fray to play Footprints. A great tune anytime, it seems to sound at its best in a juke joint like Empty Shop. Killing alto, the subtle, inventive and propulsive drumming of Bacon, and, on this session, the most impressive bass playing of Gavin Jackson. Oh, a real bonus, award-winning guitarist Ollie Farley was on the session as was Zach Fox playing tenor!
