This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. GIJF Day 1: Dean Stockdale Trio @ Sage Gateshead - March 31

Dean Stockdale’s opening night ‘late night’ performance on the concourse at Sage Gateshead was a difficult act to pull off. Festival concert goers ensconced in the halls were oblivious to a piano trio set of swinging standards and original tunes. Stockdale, regularly working either end of the M6, has a new album on the way and took the opportunity to unveil some of it at this year’s Gateshead Jazz Festival.

Having earlier exited one of the halls your reviewer caught a few numbers by Stockdale and his M6 (west of the Pennines) bass and drums team of Gavin Barras and Adam Dawson. Situated below a concrete ceiling and behind a ‘no access’ tape in front of the stage the trio worked hard to generate an atmosphere. Stockdale previewed several tracks from the forthcoming CD. Pike Place is a tune that Tynesiders have heard on more than one occasion in recent months, it serves to illustrate the composing talents of Stockdale and both Barras and Dawson made a strong contribution to it. The spirit of Oscar Peterson was, and is, ever present in Stockdale’s playing. A performance deserving of a larger audience.
