Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

But Beautiful Bill Evans

Another chance to hear…and for once no one can be anything other than delighted. All next week – Monday-Friday, Radio 3, 12 noon, repeated at 6:30pm – the subject of the long-running Composer of the Week programme is Bill Evans. In the week of the EFG London Jazz Festival this is a most welcome repeat.
Michael Berkeley’s guest on Private Passions, Radio 3, Sunday (12 noon) is, author and jazz fan, Geoff Dyer. Expect to hear some jazz. Midweek on Radio 4, Wednesday (that’s midweek), 9:00am, invites roundtable guests to talk about who knows what? As Soweto Kinch is a guest, there is every chance that the conversation will turn to jazz.

The SF JAZZ Collective reworks the music of Michael Jackson on Jazz Now at eleven o’clock on Monday evening, Radio 3.
The Sound of Soweto Radio 4, Tuesday (11:30am), tells the story not of Soweto Kinch,   rather the township of Soweto and its music, a music of defiance. Friday Night is Music Night (Friday, surprisingly) at eight o’clock is a second, quick repeat of the BBC Concert Orchestra’s performance first broadcast earlier this year with guests , vocalist Clare Teal and Lance Ellington. And don’t forget to catch the BBC Jazz pop-up station currently on air as the 2016 EFG London Jazz Festival gets into full swing. Tune to DAB radio or you can listen online.
Russell.
PS: And don't forget to tune-in to RTHK tomorrow (Sunday) for Colin Aitchison's Vintage Chart Toppers.
