Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

On the trail of a policeman

The 2016 Heritage Open Days event begins on Thursday 8th September. Many thousands of buildings, and other places not usually accessible to the public, throw open their doors, in most cases free of charge, to all comers. In Tyne and Wear the choices are many: From Mansion House to Art House – A Guided Tour offers tours of a town house on the line of Hadrian’s Wall in Newcastle city centre, the recently restored Roker Pier and Lighthouse will be opening its doors and Dunston Staithes, Gateshead will be open on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th.
Of interest to the jazz fan is a guided walk through Wallsend looking at the old haunts of Gordon Sumner. A Sting in the Trail – Wallsend Local History Walk stops by places once frequented by Sting. Yes, one time Newcastle Big Band bass player, Last Exit front man,  and long-time global (Police) superstar, Sting is the subject of a North Tyneside Heritage Open Days event. The walk is scheduled for Thursday at one o’clock. Places are limited, so, to be sure of your place, telephone 0191 643 7413.
Russell.
