CD Review: Sean Foran – Frame of Reference

Sean Foran (piano & Fender Rhodes), Stuart McCallum (guitars), Julian Argüelles (tenor & soprano saxophones), Ben Davis (cello) & Joost Hendrickx (drums)
(Review by Russell)
‘Sean Foran’s love of minimalist composers are evident in his compositions’. Record label publicity for the Australian pianist and composer’s new CD makes it clear that the likes of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich are favourites with ‘an anthemic, cinematic touch’.
The participation of cellist Ben Davis perhaps lends an authenticity to the chamber based approach sought by Foran in the making of Frame of Reference. Julian Argüelles plays a significant role on the album on both tenor and soprano saxophones. Stuart McCallum is featured on acoustic guitars.

Dare to Dream (track four of eight) is minimalism all the way. Serial hypnotic sounds – generated by unspecified fx – give way to Argüelles, Joost Hendrickx’ percussive beats, and the strings of Davis, McCallum and the Curtis Schwartz Studio’s piano, upon which Foran improvises. Argüelles’ exquisite, anguished soprano saxophone on Mish Mash is a particular delight, as is Hendrickx’ contribution behind the interplay of piano and guitar.
Frame of Reference was recorded on January 31 and  February 1, 2015.
Frame of Reference is released on Jazzhead (Head 222) on September 2.
Sean Foran tours England in October. A performance at the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle on Sunday October 9 will be in duo format with Stuart McCallum.

Russell.
