Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Gene Ammons All Stars - a hi-fi modern jazz jam session.

As one gets older one starts thinking about old films, old books, old girlfriends... You seek out the latter only to find she now looks like her mother who wasn't exactly Miss World! Likewise, the films that you loved so much are rarely as good as they were then although often better than most of the ones we see nowadays.
Fortunately, this seems to work in the other direction jazz wise.
Faced with a pile of unlistenable CDs (to my ears - BSH reviewers the postman cometh soon!) I dug into the vinyl, no, not the 12 inchers, but that long forgotten genre, the 10" LP that started it all off.

I decided that I might as well do it alphabetically and hit on the Gene Ammons All Stars - a hi-fi modern jazz jam session.
Recorded on June 15, 1955, it reveals Ammons to be a  tenor player  capable of holding his own with the other names of the time - Dexter, Wardell, Teddy, Sonny Major and Sonny Minor* and, indeed any others who'd listened to Lester.
'Jug's in good company. The brothers Farmer on Trumpet and Bass, Lou Donaldson preaching Bird, and Freddy Roach and Klook  rounding it off.
Listening to this tells me that, if the parade's passed me by, I'm the one that's waving farewell!
Lance.
*Stitt? Rollins? Major? Minor? You tell me!
