Bebop Spoken There

Further Reflections on Ushaw…

(Review by Russell)
The inaugural Ushaw Durham Jazz Festival welcomed visitors from County Durham and beyond. First-time visitors to Ushaw College were knocked out by the scale and grandeur of the former Catholic seminary. The jazz on offer similarly delivered a knockout blow. Concerts, talks, workshops, an artist in residence and a wander down Jazz Alley, Ushaw was, for three days, the jazz capital of the world.
Great music, plentiful food and drink, welcoming staff (many of them volunteers), made for a memorable first festival. Highlights? Ushaw itself, the fine weather, the people, the walk down Jazz Alley, the matchstick model of Durham Cathedral, Dennis’ quip: It’s a lang walk as he bade the second liners farewell on their march around Ushaw, Abraham Lincoln, a fire alarm, remembering Louis Stewart.
Members of Ryton Camera Club enjoyed themselves during the weekend. Two favourite photographs…Barnes and Adams having a ding-dong and Darlington lad Joe Williamson reflecting on the music of Square One. Credit to John Marlor for capturing the ding-dong and Gordon Carlton for the perfect distillation of Square One’s music.
Russell.
