There was an interesting piece in the
Guardian about the music programme The
Tube that was made in
Newcastle by Tyne Tees Television in the 1980s. At the time I was living in the
wilds of Northumberland and didn't watch much television so I missed most of the
programmes. However, it has now acquired cult status - although watching it at
a distance the reason for this is not entirely clear – but maybe you had to be
there at the time.
Anyway, Jools
Holland, one of the presenters, describes how the presenters and artists used to stay in the same hotel in Newcastle and that he would take the artists to
the Rose and Crown pub up the road. As he says 'When I
took Miles Davis in there with his horn, Jimmy, the wonderfully gloomy landlord
said, "He's not playing that in here." Little did Gloomy Jimmy know
that the chances of Miles playing his horn at the actual gig were pretty slim,
never mind in a city centre pub in Newcastle.

Miles Davis was in The Rose & Crown! You learn something every day. Probably no Blue Plaque.
And remember the controversy/shock/horror when Jools let slip with the 'groovy f$%£*&s' - Mary Whitehouse was predictably appalled!
