This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) RIP Naná Vasconcelos

Brazillian percussion Naná Vasconcelos passed away on March 9 aged 71. A player able to adapt to many styles Naná Vasconcelos won 7 consecutive Down Beat Critics' awards as Best Percussionist and also 8 Grammy Awards.

Chris Yates' 1988 Newcastle Jazz Festival programme notes said of Vasconcelos: The spectacular Brazilian percussionist has astonished Newcastle audiences twice recently with his polyrhythmic virtuosity in the diverse company of the Jan Garbarek Quartet and Don Cherry's Nu'. Vasconcelos' Newcastle Playhouse concert appearance on May 11 that year featured Cyro Batista (percussion), Teese Grol (keyboards) and Sergio Brandao (bass).
