Sage Gateshead’s concourse café has had a make-over. A
temporary artificial rugby pitch is in situ, a TV shows World Cup Rugby matches
and live music ‘associated’ with the big event will fit around scrum downs,
line-outs and other public school boy shenanigans.
Today, Saturday, Sage Gateshead is determined not to
be kicked into touch by the festival of rugby that has, seemingly, gripped
Tyneside. A day of music on the concourse will see shameless bandwagon-jumping
based on the theory ‘if you can’t beat ‘em’. Dr Paul Edis will lead a bemused
group of student musicians in a set of tunes inextricably linked to the day’s
warring nations – South Africa and Scotland. The Springbok (tenuous) link?
Piano master Abdullah Ibrahim. The Flower of Scotland connection? The Gay
Gordons, Dexter Gordon(s)-style! Four o’clock start. This could be a contender
for Gig(gle) of the Year!
