Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Friday Night?

Tomorrow night sees Pizza Express, Dean Street move into a parallel universe. Not only is the Soho venue continuing to thrive but Newcastle's Dean St. operation is dipping its toe into the jazz/pizza experience. Most people who love jazz love pizzas - correct me if I'm wrong! - so this is an opportunity to savour the mix.
The Matt Jacobs Trio are the featured band in the upstairs room and if you heard Matt at the Jazz Café Jam Session on Tuesday you will have a hint of what's in store. Doors are at 7pm with the band hitting the stage at 8pm. Admission is free but there is a price to pay, The Gerry Richardson Quartet are at the Jazz Café starting at 9pm and you don't want to miss them either! So, get there for 8pm have a pizza and a few Peroni's then get yourself over to The Caff.
Of course, if Matt's trio are as good as he was at the jam then you may have to toss a coin - tough call.

You're all missing an excellent performance from the Matt Jacobs Trio here at the inaugural session of Dean St Pizza Express Jazz sessions. It's free entry, relaxed ambience upstairs away from the Friday night hubub but with a birds-eye view of the antics of the Geordie Friday night out! See you here next for our local Mo Scott Trio on Nov 11th followed by 2more before Christmas.
(We know you're all missing this tonight because its been a hidden secret so far...and there are spare tables.) Tell your friends, book your table or come early and take your chance.... Continue to support live jazz venues. See you there.

Simonne, my apologies, I arrived at the venue only to be confronted with a staircase that my arthritic knee didn't feel able to cope with. I know, I'm a wimp! I will, of course do my best to publicise future events. Apologies also to Matt - a very fine pianist.
