This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Pilgrim Street Set @ Hoochie Coochie - Oct. 8

Richard Burns (trumpet), Gary Turner (tenor), Paul Edis (keyboards), Paul Susans (bass guitar) & Rob Walker (drums).
Second Thursday, First Priority, Hoochie Coochie. There may be rugby ahead but, last night, this was the best and only game in town - it invariably is (the best).
The PSS have got the art of fusing jazz and funk into a format that's acceptable to all without loss of integrity. 
Gary Turner, it should be Cooper, every solo is High Noon and it's as if this is his Last Chance saloon - no prisoners taken, which, in this corral, is OK. In the posse behind Gary, Rob and the two Pauls led the chase, shooting from the hip to the hip who responded enthusiastically. Meanwhile, the Sheriff , Richard Burns, burned. Fanning the flames, sending Gabriel to Boot Hill. In this company you either put up or shut up - Richard put up.
Getting away from Zane Grey,  this was yet another night of musical excitement with a balanced mix of originals by band members and a few contemporary compositions including a splendid version of Ornette's Ramblin' from Coleman's Change of the Century album. The piano, bass guitar and drums chorus only equalled by the free blast from the horns which was like a kind of avant garde Dixieland!
But such is the variety and excitement generated by this band that singling out pieces or players is pointless. I'd rather just surgest that you make your own pilgrimage to Hoochie on November 12. A week after Guy Fawkes the fireworks will still be going off on stage.
