Sage Gateshead Music Students 10 England Rugby Boys 0

BMus and BA students congregated on the concourse at Sage Gateshead for a game of rugger. Not really, they were there to play a short set in public. Some were new intake students, one or two were familiar faces, ‘veterans’ of Tyneside’s jam session scene.
Tutor Paul Edis assembled eight student musicians to play for thirty minutes. The day’s theme – South Africa v Scotland. The sporty business would soon kick-off at St James’ Park, this Sage affair was the warm up. Abdullah Ibrahim represented the Springboks; Kalahari and Soweto two expansive tunes edited for the occasion. The ensemble; piano, bass, drums and percussion, two guitarists, an alto player and a vocalist. Dr Edis played alto and piano. Flower of Scotland minus the bagpipes (although a six-stringer made an effort to replicate the dirge) unexpectedly scored (a runaway try) with a new vocalist to the scene (certainly new to BSH).
A student pianist/lyricist/vocalist impressed, the rhythm boys got it together, a half hour run out, all will benefit – welcome to Sage Gateshead, welcome to Tyneside!
Note to Dr Edis: prescribe attendance at the Jazz Café’s twice monthly jam sessions (the first and third Tuesdays in the month) and the Jazz Coop’s Sunday afternoon jams at The Globe (second and fourth Sundays at 3pm). The student vocalist (and others) should be heard again!
Russell.
