Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tonight (August 26) @ The Cherry Tree

A rather special night at the Cherry Tree Restaurant (9 Osborne Rd., Jesmond, Newcastle NE2 2AE. 0191 2399924) tonight - the Peter Gilligan Trio featuring Alice Grace. Peter Gilligan is well known and justifiably recognised as one of the best jazz pianists around whilst Alice Grace, in a relatively short space of time, has built up a strong fan base that began with an impromptu appearance at a late night jam session at this years GIJF. Since then she has gone from strength to strength. Prior to arriving in the north east her career incorporated a stint with NYJO, the Guildhall School of Music, the house band at Ronnie Scott's and a recent tour of Dubai. This, her first appearance at the Cherry Tree, promises to be a very special night.
Another relative newcomer to the area is drummer Russ Morgan who, like Ms. Grace, is making waves in all the right places. Add Mister Dependable Paul Grainger on double bass and you have the recipe for a great night. Talking of recipes, the food's fantastic!
My suggestion is to reserve a table now - it's yours for the whole evening. Doors open at 6.30pm and the music starts at 7.00pm. Table d'Hote and A la Carte menus served at usual prices without cover charge.
Lance.
