Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

ACV (Mk 2) to debut in Edinburgh

(Report by Russell/photo of Andy Champion courtesy of Mike Tilley).
Andy Champion’s ACV is reborn. A new line-up – Chris Sharkey, Ollie Dover, Matthew Bourne and Joost Hendrickx – can be heard live on Jazz on 3 this Monday at 11:00pm. A late-night set in the BBC’s Blue Tent at the Edinburgh Festival will feature new material written by bassist Champion. Essential listening. Earlier on Monday evening Proms Late Extra (Radio 3, 10:00pm) includes a set by the Mark Pringle Trio. Pianist Pringle brings his trio to Newcastle’s Jazz Café on Friday 11 September. Advance tickets are available by telephoning the venue – 0191 222 9882.
London Jazz blog’s Sebastian Scotney looks at the connection between jazz and sports on Jazz Line-Up (Saturday, Radio 3, 5:00pm – one hour earlier than usual). Geoffrey Smith’s Jazz (midnight, Saturday, on Radio 3) celebrates the career of Johnny Griffin. On Sunday evening at five past ten on BBC4 parts three and four of Sinatra: All or Nothing at All are to be screened back-to-back (first shown yesterday).
On Friday 28 August tune-in to BBC 4 for three hours and more of what promises to be a feast of jazz. Friday Night at the Proms: The Story of Swing (first broadcast live on Radio 3, August 11) does what it says on the tin. Clare Teal, Guy Barker and a cast of thousands swing the Albert Hall. The so-called ‘jazz diva’ label often attributed to legendary figures in the jazz world is examined in Queens of Jazz: the Joy and Pain of the Jazz Divas (BBC 4, 10:45pm) following the Proms concert.
Russell.
