Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

OXYD play Nirvana @ Bridge Hotel, Newcastle - August 2

Julien Pontvianne (tenor sax); Olivier Laisney (trumpet); Alexandre Herer (keyboards); Oliver de Gabriele (bass); Thibault Perriard (drums).
(Review by Steve H.)
As keyboard player, Alexandre Herer, explained at the start of this JNE gig by French band OXYD (en route to Manchester Jazz Festival), anyone expecting a cover/tribute band would be disappointed. This was true but anyone looking forward to an evening of highly charged improvised contemporary jazz would have been only 2 sets from heaven.
Although not that widely versed in their back catalogue, as far as I’m concerned Nirvana were the last truly great rock band, so the prospect of seeing a jazz interpretation of this great music left me a little nervous. I needn’t have worried. Although the influences can be clearly heard, not just with the hard rock drum and bass rhythm section, there were also snippets of Nirvana songs buried within the performance. This though was most definitely a modern jazz gig full of great solos and energy. In fact Oliver Laisney wins my trumpeter of the year award. It appeared that the very sizable audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance and the downside of the evening was that they ran of tunes when everyone would have delighted in hearing more from this exciting outfit - Nevermind
