Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

If You're Near the 606 on Sunday...

606 Sunday 22nd February 8.30pm...Penzance-based singer/songwriter Johanna Graham leads a fabulous quartet tonight for her highly anticipated debut gig at the Club. Performing a mixture of standards, pop classics and fantastic original compositions, her varied repertoire provides an innovative and fresh interpretation of vocal-led modern jazz.
Citing musical influences from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day and Julie London, her debut album "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" released on 33Jazz Records, features her warm and mellow vocals and offers an eclectic sound that incorporates both her individual style and vocal ability, with All About Jazz describing the album as "...a musically satisfying journey". Her award-winning quartet has already performed at the likes of the Pizza Express Soho, Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival, Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival, Bude Jazz Festival and the Teignmouth Jazz Festival. The quartet comprises three highly accomplished musicians from the West Country, with Martin Bowie (who also is a co-writer of much of her material) providing classy guitar riffs and top level phrasing, insightful double bass playing from the highly experienced Tim Greenhalgh, and exhilarating drumming from Damian Rodd. A real treat of an evening from a truly gifted singer that is sure to entertain and captivate in equal measure.
“A fine singer with a palpably individual style" Jazzwise Magazine;
"A lively and polished group.." All About Jazz;
“Beautiful Vocals” Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders)
