Film of the moment Whiplash is included in Matthew Sweet’s
selection of ‘jazz-inspired film music’ in Sound of Cinema (Radio 3, Saturday 17
January, 4:00pm). Justin Hurwitz, composer, is in good company with
Alex North’s score for A Streetcar Named
Desire on the playlist.
Shabaka Hutchings plays some of
his favourite South African jazz tracks and his band the Blue Notes can be
heard in concert at last year’s London Jazz Festival on Jazz Line-Up at 9:00pm (Radio
3). Earlier, on Radio 4 (2:30pm) tune in to hear the ‘blues-infused musical
fairy tale’ Drama: Kneehigh’s The Wild
Bride. Carl Grose’s play adapted for radio by the playwright and Emma Rice
features music written by Stu Barker. Jez Nelson’s Jazz on 3 (Monday, Radio 3, 11:00pm) could be a good listen with a
set recorded at London’s Café Oto featuring John Dikeman, Hamid Drake and
William Parker. A similarly good listen could be Somerset Blues: The Story of Acker Bilk (Tuesday, Radio 2, 10:00pm).
Actor and singer Clarke Peters presents a one hour tribute to the man from the
West Country. Radio 3’s In Tune
invariably has some jazz content from week to week and Thursday’s edition,
4:30pm, finds Empirical performing live in the studio. Gershwin’s Horns promises to be an oddity. BBC Radio 4 Extra,
Friday (8:30pm) looks at An American in
Paris. Gershwin and car horns…beep, beep!
