Great North Big Band Jazz
Festival title holders Durham University Big Band warmed-up for their
forthcoming appearance at the Pizza Express, Dean Street London, with an
express (half hour), midday performance at the Music School, Durham University.
Tony Eales reports a select
audience heard the band being put through its paces working on material first
encountered at a Pete Churchill workshop and, intriguingly, the tune of the
moment…Whiplash! The band bus heads
to London on
February 15th, setting-off at 4:00am! Wakey, wakey! Students being students
they will probably stagger out from an all-night party, board the bus and catch
some shut-eye on the way down to the Smoke.
On March 7th the award winning Durham band defends its title at the Great North Big Band
Jazz Festival at Sunderland University Students’ Union .
Let’s hope Whiplash is in the
competition programme. Further details of this fantastic event (open to the
public) will be posted nearer the time.
