Jazz Improvisation Workshop @ Jazz Café January 13.

Although always interested in what went on at the Jazz Improvisation Workshop, being a non musician I had never summoned up the confidence to actually attend. However, an experienced rock guitarist friend of mine said he fancied coming along so off we went to the upstairs room of the Jazz Café. Assorted musicians were there some I knew - Zoe, Gabi, Andy and Wes  - and apologies to those I didn't. 
All in all we had 2 percussionists, 2 vocalists, 3 guitarists, a saxophonist and a bassist. Andy Champion was facilitating the evening so when he wasn't actually playing bass he was doing ‘conduction’ - this is a bit like being a conductor but only with no score and no idea about what will happen next. The role involves directing the individuals performing to play louder softer shorter longer or to stop playing altogether. It starts simply with Andy turning to one of the musicians and telling them ‘to play’  each player is then brought into the piece and what evolves is a fascinating construct; the musicians taking inspiration from one another as well as from the ‘conduction’.  As a spectator, I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and  I can recommend it to anyone interested in the creation of improvised music as an art form. My musician friend was also very positive about the experience and says he will be back for the next workshop on February 10.
