Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

DB Jazz Project @ Jazz Café January 16.

David Keighley (saxes); Thomas MacMillan (gtr); Adrian Sander (bs gtr); Ben Grant (dms).
(Review by Lance).
After watching the film Whiplash I was on a high and I wasn't sure if I wanted anything to temper my mood. However, it was mid evening and the Jazz Café but a brisk short walk away, so I strode purposefully forth arriving just in time for the DB Jazz Project's first set.
I wasn't disappointed indeed if Whiplash hadn't been big band orientated this quartet could have provided the soundtrack!
A mixed program of originals, jazz standards (Midnight Voyage, A Love Supreme, All Blues and My Favourite Things) and pop/rock classics (Space Odyssey, Message in a Bottle, something by Iron Maiden) made for an enjoyable evening.
Keighley certainly knows his way around alto, tenor and soprano displaying an enviable technique as well as displaying his emotional side on Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
MacMillan produced some stratospheric sounds from guitar and pedals, Sanders was sound and Grant didn't get any chairs thrown at him!
Catch them again, they're quite ubiquitous!
Lance.

Another great review by Mr North east jazz man Lance Liddle of BEBOP SPOKEN HERE. We enjoyed playing to a very nice and listening crowd of music lovers at the Jazz Café.

Yes, where would we be without Sir Lancelot's wise jazz write ups and listings on the blog! The gig was great last night - I thought the repertoire was excellent - Lance forgot to mention the Nirvana number 'Come As You Are', which I reckon Kurt Cobain would have enjoyed.

Really enjoyed the night too, thought the band were great, varied set exciting, and a good mixture of covers and original material. Looking forward to seeing them at Blue Rinse. After watching Whiplash, understand the chair throwing reference. Great review by Lance
