Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

EP Review: The Hot Wok - I Have to Peas

Raúl Romo(alt/bar); Gonzalo Fdz. de Larinoa (tmb); Perico Ráez (dms); Jon Ander Sanchez Revach (helicon); Coco G. Diez (vbs).
(Review by Lance).
I'm not quite sure how to pigeon-hole this disc from Spain - Spanish Funk? (Spunk!). It's dancy, it's jazzy and I'm not surprised that Hoochie offered them a gig if they came to NEUK (North East United Kingdom) - they're that kind of band - NUKE them they would!.
Blistering alto, soulful trombone and the best vibes this side of Chris Jelly, incorporated  with what I take to be some Spanish Rap make this a disc to party to. Patti - la grande señora del partido del jazz clásico Whitley Bay - brought this EP to my attention and, whilst I'm not sure if the music quite ticks the WBJP boxes, it would certainly slot in at Hoochie, Globe, or Jazz Café.
The band can also be heard on YouTube at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival (Ah! San Sebastian - what memories of the Newcastle Big Band, Clark Terry, Arnette Cobb, cerveza, cuba libra and all that jazz back in 1973).the band is better heard on the EP rather than the disjointed YT clip.
Lance.
PS: If, like me, you hadn't a clue what the Helicon was, it's a kind of tuba/sousaphone - every band should have one.
