This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Collective @ Hoochie 9/11

Dixon described this month's offering as "Acid Jazz" - I wasn't too sure about what he meant, me having grown up long before all these sub-divisions when jazz was either Trad or Modern or, as the Duke once put it,  Good or Bad.
Tonight was definitely in the former camp and the audience, of whom there were plenty, agreed.
I was particularly looking forward to hearing Al on sax even though the opening number featured Al on flute!
He didn't disappoint on that instrument either. Truly a master of musical metal.
Overall there were lots of repetitive phrases and tension building riffs with Dom and Tim digging in deep spurred on by MM and MD to create a groove that grabbed you by the testicular - yes they had a ball!
The most aptly titled number was Typhoon. This could have been subtitled Tornado - the storm was well and truly blown up!
Down on the floor the audience dug it almost as much as the 2 for 1 cocktails. Some even danced. It's good that so many young players today can hold their own in any company.
Catch them again next month (second Thursday - October 9).
