This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Kenny Wheeler

The news that trumpet player/composer/arranger Kenny Wheeler has passed away came as a shock if not a surprise - he'd been ill for sometime. Nevertheless, his death was an untimely reminder of how few of the jazz greats are left. Although Canadian by birth, where he was much loved, Kenny spent most of his musical career in this country. His ground-breaking Windmill Tilter Suite with the Dankworth band is an important work and invites comparision with any of the extended works of many, more renowned, composers.
Kenny Wheeler died September 18 aged 84.
Sadly missed.

Those are kind words, Lance. Just a couple of things, the hoax was a hoax about a purported hoax and is a pretty sick kind of "humour". Also Kenny's seminal album recorded with the John Dankworth Orchestra was actually entitled "Windmill Tilter" and thankfully has now been reissued on CD

It was a fake hoax warning. It seemed to use a ready-made template to add a few relevant details.
