Bebop Spoken There

George Porter Jr.: ''To me, syncopation is like jazz. It wasn't meant for the masses. It was meant just for a hip few". (DownBeat, May 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Celebrating Thirty Years of Jazz at Blaydon

Mark Toomey (alto sax) Noel Dennis (trumpet & flugelhorn) Jeremy McMurray (piano) Neil Harland (bass) David Francis (drums) and the man himself ROLY VEITCH (guitar/vocal).
(Review by Kathy/Photo by Elaine Francis.)
Last Sunday (September 21) there was a very important event at the Black Bull Pub, Blaydon.
A celebration of 30 years of Jazz and all thanks to the tireless efforts of ROLY VEITCH.
Over those years he has welcomed such artists as Paul Booth (Tenor Sax) who came to The Bull when he was starting out as a musician and has now become one of the top UK Saxophonists + Roy Williams (Trombone); John Barnes (Reeds); and Janusz Carmello (Pocket Cornet) to name but a few. Alongside the “stars”, Roly has, of course, always supported the very many talented musicians from our own area.
Sunday night was no exception as the musicians highlighted at the top of the page delighted their audience with classics from the Great American Song Book such as, All The Things You Are, Stella By Starlight and East Of The Sun alongside renditions of Mark’s own compositions written in his usual Boppish Style.
Another night to remember,  and to Roly a big THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC and long may it continue. In fact for anyone interested, on November 23 at The Black Bull, we look forward to yet another great night of Jazz with the wonderful Tenor Saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos and quartet. All are welcome.
More photos.
Kathy.

Great review Kathy. It would be nice to be able to be in two places at once! Gigs at various venues on the same night makes for a dilemma.
