This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Henry’s Swing Club @ The Brandling Villa. April 1

Henry’s Swing Club, Newcastle’s longest running blues jam, convenes once a month (first Tuesday) at the Brandling Villa. The revitalised South Gosforth hostelry boasts countless real ales (Wylam’s Gold Tankard the pick), regular live music nights, beer festivals, legendary pie festivals and a dog-friendly welcome. A pea-souper of a night threatened, the Brandling a welcome sight. The joint was jumpin’. Hoochie Coochie Men and Black Magic Women crowded the room. I Need Your Love So Bad…A cast of thousands, a guitar night, expensive hardware – Les Pauls, f-hole Gibsons, Strats, Telecasters. Harp players wailed, Lounge Lizards lounged, Boneshakers shook down at the Crossroads. Early period Beatles and Stones (The Last Time), My Babe, Aint’t No Sunshine (tenor sax and vocals beguiled the Black Magic Women), The Thrill Is Gone, Hoochie Coochie Man…first rate playing, not a duffer in sight.
