Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

LP Review: Back Door - BBC 'In Concert'

Ron Aspery (horns & keys); Colin Hodgkinson (bs gtr & vcl); Tony Hicks (dms) + Alexis Korner gtr/vcl/compere)
Who can forget the impact Back Door made on the jazz scene back in the early '70s. Not only that, they were from the north-east (Teesside/North Yorks). Just as the Emcee 5 had impacted 10 or so years earlier so did Back Door.
However, the two bands were miles apart stylistically. Emcee 5 were a smooth, polished Jazz Messengers influenced band whereas Back Door exuded raw, uncontained emotion. This was blues mixed with jazz and rock - one of the first fusion bands. Aspery played some way out alto moving into Roland Kirk territory at times. Screeching, screaming but always with meaning. Hodgkinson's bass entwined with Aspery's lines at times sounding almost as one.
This live BBC recording has Alexis Korner guesting so, needless to say, there's a whole lotta blues with Korner's guitar as earthy as anything from the deep south - either side of the Atlantic. Both Hodgkinson and Korner are listed as doing vocals but, to me, it sounds as one person which I guess is Korner although he sounds different to the Korner I remember- maybe it's Hodgkinson. I need help on this one!
Whatever, it's one important piece of vinyl and produced at the standard we've come to expect from Gearbox Records.
Lance.
PS: I contacted Colin Hodgkinson who has agreed to identify the vocals after he's heard the record again.
