This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Graham Hardy Trio @ Star Inn, Newcastle. August 7.

A vignette. Soft, gentle dinner jazz - ideal for the Cherry Tree but possibly in the earthier setting of the Star Inn a drummer may have added the vital spark
Musically it was delightful. How can you go wrong with such tasteful players? My Romance, Black Orpheus, All The Things You Are, All Blues, You Don't Know What Love Is .The latter, played impeccably on flugel horn  - Art Farmer sprung to mind -.made for am enjoyable set played in sepulchral silence apart from the polite applause. 
Love For Sale, Have You Met Miss Jones (that gal certainly gets around) On Green Dolphin Street and In a Mellow Tone provided the bulk of the second set.
Hardy has a cool, modern, refreshing sound on both trumpet and flugel that blends easily with the eloquent guitar playing of Strong and the pivotal bass work of Shoulder.
No jammers this week.
