Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

RIP Terry Lightfoot.

Trad clarinettist Terry Lightfoot died yesterday (March 15) He was a former associate of Kenny Ball's who died last week as well as being a bandleader in his own right.
Lighfoot was a key figure in the 1960s Trad boom hovering around the periphery of The Charts with True Love, King Kong and There is a Tavern in the Town.
He also appeared in the film It's Trad, Dad.
Terry Lightfoot was 77.
Rest in Peace.
Obituary.
Lance.

I heard via a friend in the U.K. the recent news on Terry Lightfoot following so soon after Kenny Ball.
My late Husband Reg Tracey(who was Kenny's Brother in law) Managed Kenny Ball for many years
and also Terry Lightfoot. I emigrated to Perth, Australia 9 years ago to join my daughters and we were
shocked when friends in the U.K. contacted us and would therefore be grateful if you can pass on our condolances.
I have been sent newspaper reports but wondered if Terry's Wife Iris is still alive as I knew her well but
unlike a mention of Betty Ken's late Wife, can see nothing so far on Iris.
Sincerely, Georgie Tracey

I joined Terry's band on bass in 1974 when Reg was the manager.
I attended the funeral yesterday and Iris and two daughters Melinda and Michelle are still alive-their other daughter unfortunately died of cancer some years ago.
Iris's address should you wish to get in touch is:
20, Lilly Hill,
Olney,
Bucks MK46 5EZ
Hope this is of some help Georgie.
Kind regards,
Mike Godwin.
