This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Launch: Kai Hoffman: Do It While You Can @ Ronnie's Bar.

Ann Alex reviewed Kai Hoffman's latest CD enthusiastically - click here. However, just in case she was working for "The Sisterhood", I decided to check out the Launch at Ronnie's for myself!
As we waited for the doors opening I noted, across Frith Street, a blue plaque to no less a musician than Mozart. Little did he know how close he'd got to the big time!
In the upstairs venue known as Ronnie's Bar, the wine was flowing and '50s rock and roll was coming from the speakers. Kai was being sociable in a figure hugging black satin dress that looked good and was au fait with the music.
More vino then we were off! The dress had been replaced with a pink strapless affair - this was Marilyn 1954 but Kia was Kia 2013!
Some Boys took us through the album tracks culminating in Sweet Georgia Brown. I thought that Anita O'Day had made this her own but, tell you what, if she were alive, Anita would be looking over her shoulder and maybe Kia would have slipped past on the other side - both had/have great dress sense!
This was a sensational performance despite the high level of conversation in the adjunct. Apart from Kai, the guys in the band gave her perfect backing and Kurmayr's solos were exceptional. .
Prior to the performance, Walter Love of BBC Irish Radio introduced Kai in glowing terms - as soon as we heard her sing we knew it wasn't blarney!
