Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Jazz Esquires Farewell To The Porthole - Wednesday March 13.

Laurie Brown Leader & Drums, Stan Nicholson Bass Guitar, Robin Douthwaite Guitar, Roy Gibson Keyboard, Terry Dalton Trombone, Tony Winder Reeds, Miles Watson Trumpet & Vocal.
(Report by Miles)
After 27 plus years it was a wrench for the Esquires to say farewell to the old pub although it was anything but a sad occasion. From the usual opener It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing the band ran the gamut of the book from Ida Sweet as Apple Cider through to Intermission Riff in the first half.
Brian Lineham took the interval with his harmonica, Dave “Bosie” sang a couple of numbers, the rhythm section gave us The Girl From Ipanema. A passing bugler sang The Pub Has No Beer, as most of the pumps had run dry, and That's My Desire, and Peter Morgan performed the raffle with his usual aplomb.
The second half started off with roaring C Jam Blues and kept the pressure up until the final Woodchoppers Ball. The girls behind the bar, Tracy & Pam, did sterling work and will be sorely missed by the band and the audience who were the usual great crowd and who have promised to follow on to the Black Horse.
An ironic post script to the whole affair was the news that the pub is not now closing, the owner intends to keep the bar open while he converts the upstairs to a restaurant!
Miles.
