This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gateshead International Jazz Festival 2013 Preview

British reedsman Larry Stabbins enjoyed considerable success in the 1980s as co-leader of the band Working Week. The cross-over jazz/funk/pop/soul act achieved air play and scaled the charts. Veteran British jazzers were in on the plot and vinyl ‘product’ of the period has become rather collectable. Stabbins last appeared in Newcastle at the Corner House Hotel and this gig at the Gateshead International Jazz Festival has the makings of a late-night, no holds barred, raucous blow out. The line-up features the wonderful Zoe Rahman (piano) with the promise of an inter-galactic trip to Planet Coltrane and orbiting station Pharaoh Sanders. Catch the all-night bus, book a taxi, walk home, best of all go to the late night session at Hoochie Coochie ffor Soweto Kinch’s second festival appearance. Whatever you do, don’t miss Stonephace Stabbins.
