Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Hot Club of Cowtown @ The Sage, Gateshead

Elana James (fiddle/vcl); Whit Smith (gtr/vcl); Jake Erwin (bs/backing vcl).
(Review by Lance)
Long ago when I was very young and just taking my first uncertain steps into the mysterious world of jazz I heard a record by Hank Williams. I can't recall the title 'cept it was a blues and had a scorching violin solo in the middle. Even at that early age I realised that it wasn't a jazz record which confused me as, without doubt, the fiddle solo was as jazzy as anything I'd heard up to that point by Grappelli or Venuti. Over the years I've listened to lots of genres and, call it what you may, when the solos come round they're playing jazz.
Thus it was tonight with the magnificent Hot Club of Cowtown - who merge Country and Swing into what is generally referred to as Western Swing. Not that I think the three tier full Hall 2 at The Sage were bothered about genre. They came out to enjoy themselves and they surely did if Standing Ovations mean anything - Hell I was standing and applauding myself!
Elana James plays some swinging fiddle - does she not - and takes no prisoners when she sings either. I loved the Pussy Cat Song (me being a feline fanatic). This was a song about a missing cat and it crossed my sadistic mind that it may actually have ended up as the strings on her violin!
Whit Smith (pictured) played great Chet style guitar as well as alternating with Elana on the vocals. On slap bass Jake Erwin did the business - don't need no drummer with Jake around.
It was an exhilarating evening that emphasised the point that music - be it jazz or whatever - should always be entertainment. Tonight it certainly was.
Their latest CD - Rendezvous Rhythm - puts the cows out to graze and concentrates on the Hot Club side of things. Watch this space for a review of the disc which features many of the numbers played tonight.
Lance.
