Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

7.30PM SUNDAY 25TH NOVEMBER SONSALE + TOM GIBBS QUARTET with WILL VINSON

Valentin Ceccaldi (cello); Andy Champion ( bass); Sylvain Darrifourcq (drums); Corey Mwamba (vibes) //
Will Vinson (alto sax); Tom Gibbs (keyboards); Euan Burton (bass); James Maddren (drums)
Since our last e-mailing, Tyneside's Andy Champion has been named as one of eight young British jazz musicians to participate in the 2012/13 Take Five professional development scheme (predecessors include Kit Downes and Soweto Kinch) covering all aspects of a jazz musician's life. He is joined in the Jazz North East - curated brand new quartet, Sonsale, by two Parisians and by Derby's Corey Mwamba. The band will re-convene next year for a UK/European tour for which promises of subsidy have been obtained from French and British sources and for which a first booking has just been received - from a venue in Paris.
Not quite a debut performance for the Tom Gibbs Quartet but a first tour promoting their debut CD. The musicians have all played together before in various combinations but being 'in demand' young players (how many different bands have we seen James Maddren with in the past couple of years?), getting together takes some organising; for Will Vinson most of all since, though UK born, he lives and works
The gig is badged "Jazz North East" signifying contemporary jazz generally close to the mainstream tradition of the music, though don't expect a recreation of the past. Please note the early start for the gig - 7.30PM rather than 8.00PM so we can fit in the two bands and still have you on your way home in time This gig is a co-promotion with Splinter. Note that the music room is inaccessible to wheelchair users.
BRIDGE HOTEL, CASTLE GARTH, NEWCASTLE NE1 1RQ
Admission at the door from 7.00PM -  £8.00 & £6.00 concessions (claimants, senior citizens, students)
