This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Collective @ Hoochie.

The Collective is collecting fans judging by the decent sized audience. Deservedly so. The formula of house band and soloist works fairly well.

Tonight's guest, Arthur Higgins, blew some great tenor. A smart looking dude in a light grey suit he not only looked the part but walked the walk. I don't know why but just about every great tenor player I've ever seen and heard has worn a smart suit whether it be Zoot Sims or, more recently, Simon Spillett.
Presentation counts.
Arthur dug in and hit the right groove early on, building up through Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Watermelon Man and the final blues where he let loose on his best solo of the night. This young man deserves to go far.
That was the second set that was. The first set saw The Collective grind through some jazz/ROCK blues.
Tim, we all know by now is a fine guitarist - he's got the guitar hero licks off to a T and, not only that, he's got the facial expressions too!
On bass, Katie seems to grow in confidence and ability with each session - a cucumber cool chick.
On keys, Dominic lays it down in both ensemble and solo whilst Robbie is a percussion powerhouse.
