Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jukebox Mambo

This is The Mambo! What the Heck is The Mambo? Well this is the dance that made its mark in the States back in the 1950's which maybe has returned if enough people buy this CD!. A health warning! This isn't the sanitised form celebs danced to at the Copa back in the 'forties. That blandness is conspicuous by its absence here. Instead we get it at, in the main, street level.
Lots of jazz blowing from the Red Callender Sextet, Gerald Wilson Orchestra - the baritone player has a wild blast and the band finish off with a Herman type Apple Honey trumpet phrase before bowing down to tradition with the obligatory "OOH!"
Cosy Cole keeps the jazz presence alive but the jazz is there all the time even if the performers don't know it!
Joe Lutcher, Mabel Scott, Percy Mayfield, Dave Bartholomew,  Jo Loco, Camille Howard are just some of the cats hogging the mic! But there's lot's of tracks with great solos. Gloria Irving's I Need a Man had me thinking about sending her my CV until I realised it was recorded in 1957!
Be warned - if you visit Cher Lance this Xmas you'd better have practised your mambo steps because these tracks will be on the playlist!
Lance.
:Jukebox Mambo. Will be released by Jazzman Records on November 26.
