Bebop Spoken There

Melissa Aldana: ''Having to play a ballads album, which is something very revealing for a saxophone player, would help me to question some new aspects of how to go deeper into sound." (DownBeat May, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Aaron Liddard - Nylon Man

I know this is a cop-out but, having heard the touring version of the band at a knockout session at Hoochie last month which I reviewed HEREI felt I couldn't add anything to what that renowned and highly acclaimed American jazz authority, Scott Yanow, jazz journalist/historian and author of 12 books including his musical memoirs, Life Through The Eyes Of A Jazz Journalist, hadn't already covered in his sleeve notes so I've humbly taken the back seat and posted Scott Yanow's notes in full. He says everything I wanted to say only says it better! Lance

Sunday Night @ the Globe: Jo Harrop and Jamie McCredie - Nov. 6

(© Debra Milne)
Jo Harrop (vocals); Jamie McCredie (guitar).

The room was crowded. Theatre style seating at the front, cabaret style further back. All were occupied. I bagged a chair at the last table any latecomers had to stand - that's how popular this gig was, and deservedly so.

I've waxed eloquently over these two artists many times over the years both as a duo and individually and tonight, as always, they lived up to and maybe even exceeded my expectations.

R I P Oliver ‘Ollie’ Soden

Local pianist and drummer, Oliver ‘Ollie’ Soden, passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning (Nov. 6) surrounded by close family including his son, string bass player, Cliff Soden.

Over the years, Ollie was a regular on drums or piano with various local bands including the Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band, the Mississippi Dreamboats, the Vieux Carré Jazzmen and Brian Carrick’s Heritage Hall Stompers.

Funeral details to be announced shortly. R.I.P. Ollie.

NOTE:

Tonight @ the Globe: Jo Harrop & Jamie McCredie - Weathering the Storm

Tonight at the Globe is unmissable. Just read what I said when I reviewed the album when it first came out in 2020 WEATHERING THE STORM.

Hearing this dynamic duo performing it live promises to be an unforgettable experience. If you already have the album you'll want to be there tonight. If you haven't, I guarantee you'll be taking a copy home with you. Lance

Sven and Benny - Press release from Simon Wolfe

Ask just about any jazz musician with a long enough memory to name the best film ever made about jazz and the chances are they'll pick a 1976 Swedish movie called "Sven Klang's Combo".

It was shown a couple of times on TV, the last time in the mid-80s, but since then has been virtually unobtainable. I started looking into getting it a UK release when the first lockdown hit in 2020. It had been restored and was showing on a Swedish streaming site but without subtitles. After a series of rebuffs I was delighted when Olivier Stockman of Sands Films offered to take it on. Subtitles have been sourced and the film will be shown on Tuesday 15th November as part of Sands’ London Jazz Festival programme.  Live music before the
screening tbc.

Details HERE, booking recommended.

Monk on screen - today @ Tyneside Cinema

Rewind and Play: Thelonious Monk.

Today, Sunday Nov. 6 at 3:10pm,  Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema features a one-off screening of an interview with Thelonious Monk that was originally shown on French television in 1969. It runs for 65 mins and offers a rare opportunity to see Monk handle a French interviewer.

Full details HERE. Lance.

PS: Thanks to Dave Clarke for bringing this to my attention.

McJazz & Friends

One of the things, and there are many, that I like about the Classic Jazz Party is the CD stall.

Now I'm not short of CDs and, if I had any sense, I'd stay away from the stall but, sense has never been my strong point and, once again, I was drawn irresistibly towards it. I fought hard against forking out the princely sum of a pound and I almost made it until, at the very end of the table, my resistance crumbled.

Sandy Brown' McJazz & Friends Featuring Al Fairweather & Dick Heckstall-Smith was too much to resist.

Mike Durham's International Classic Jazz Party: Charlie's Ideas - Paul Howard's Society Serenaders. Nov. 4

Malo Mazurié, Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpets); Christoph Hermann (trombone); Claus Jacobi, Michael McQuaid, Mauro Porro (reeds); David Boeddinghaus (piano); Phil Rutherford (tuba); Nicholas D. Ball (drums, vocal).

I was unfamiliar with the Paul Howard Society Serenaders. They only recorded, according to my copy of Jazz Directory Volume 4 (GHI) which, seemingly back in 1952 would have cost me ten shillings. As I was still at school at the time that would have been the equivalent of about five weeks pocket money or, in real terms, a lot of gobstoppers from the nearby tuck shop. So I probably bought it many years later!

However, I digress, The band, led by Jacobi, played ten of 'The Great 15' and it was an impressive sound. I particularly liked the passages that were played, and perfectly synchronised, when the saxes formed a clarinet trio. Everyone soloed including occasional chirps from Tyneside's own boss of the brass basement Phil Rutherford.

Mike Durham's International Classic Jazz Party: Trombonology - Sweet Tommy Dorsey. Nov. 4

Alistair Allan (trombone, vocal); Torstein Kubban (trumpet); Jean-Francois-Bonnel (reeds); Martin Litton (piano); Félix Hunot (banjo, guitar); Harry Evans (tuba, bass); Richard Pite (drums); Roya Naldi (vocals).

A tribute to TD with Allan in the title role which he did admirably capturing the tone and, despite his suggestion that Dorsey wasn't a jazzman - he could certainly help them out when they were busy - his own solos laid down no doubts as to his own credentials.
