The Chet Set @ The Globe, Newcastle - May 10

The Globe was the latest stop for Pete Tanton's winning project. His subject - Chet Baker - has pulling power. This evening the award-winning Railway Street venue pulled a decent crowd. What's more, it would prove to be an attentive, listening crowd. 

But not for me...I get along without you...The more I see you...Time after time...the lyrics so very familiar, beautifully sung by bandleader Tanton. Pianist Alan Law, a man who gives the impression he is never in a hurry, invariably finds the right chord under Tanton's vocal and he did just that this evening, time after time. 

Mick Shoulder appeared to have found a new sound this evening. The clarity of sound emanating from his double bass was instantly apparent, quite revelatory! And then there was John Bradford, as responsive and sensitive a drummer you could wish to hear. Pete Tanton's combo - Pete, Alan, Mick and John - is rapidly making all things 'Chet' its own. Pete (trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals) plays Chet Baker his way, no mere copyist, is Pete. 

Let's get lost in a 'cool school' jazz gig with casual, but informative, narration. Catching a Chet Set gig should be on everyone's bucket list. Russell
