Although Vince Dunn was listed as the leader of this group he delegated the announcements of tunes to his band-mate Mike Hughes - a vibes player from The Wirral who was also a person I had not heard before. The rest of the musicians were very well known to me and I suspect to the rest of the audience. The tunes played this evening were an interesting selection . 14 in total. Some familiar jazz standards and some great ballads you do not hear too much these days in jazz venues. There were some feedback issues during the opening number the Mike Gibbs composition Gentle Rain but they soon got it fixed and by the time the second tune got under way things were ok soundwise.
Mike Hughes used a make of vibraphone I had not seen before called Bergerault and it sounded to me that he may be a fan of Cal Tjader as he used a similar four mallet approach and I think Morning was a Tjader tune.
Regarding Vince Dunn, after doing some research I find he is based in the Berkshire area of the UK, runs a drum clinic and has toured extensively with some very well known personalities. There is a wealth of info on the internet should you require it. He also runs a 20 piece big band that would be fun to hear if he ever brings it up north. I would describe his style of drumming as powerhouse and with a strong Afro-Cuban influence. Dave Lynane did his usual solid basswork and Richard Wetherall had some amazing solos which are always a pleasure to hear.
