The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Kaberry Big Band @ The Seahorse, Whitley Bay - May 16

The Seahorse is home to Whitley Bay FC's supporters' club. The clubhouse/pub is open to all and this evening the Kaberry Big Band would entertain an enthusiastic full house. Formerly the Vermont Big Band, the change of name honours the late Chris Kaberry, the band's much-missed MD.

Two sets, an interval with a free hot buffet (curry!), convivial company, what's not to like? Drummer Michael Mather, not unknown to BSH readers, is the ensemble's new MD and would direct affairs from behind his kit. Billed as 'Plays the Rat Pack & Sinatra', this evening's concert would, indeed, deliver what it promised on the tin/poster. 

Rat Pack numbers aplenty, all but a handful sung by the band's vocalist, the majority of the solos were taken by tenor saxophonist Ian, trumpeter Dave and depping 'bone man, the SSBB's Chris Kurgi-Smith with Michael Mather's non-Rat Pack feature - Sing, Sing, Sing - deservedly raising the roof. From the opening number (Night and Day) through to the closing number of the night (New York, New York) it's a fair bet to suggest everyone in the room knew every tune. A canny night was had by all.
