Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Peter Erskine - Peregrine (Hard Wag Records)

Peter Erskine (drums); Alan Pasqua (piano, elec. piano); Scott Colley (bass) + Kate Lamont (vocals tk 5); Bob Sheppard (saxes tks 5, 8); Brian Kilgore perc. tk 5)

A most enjoyable album by three fine musicians, plus guests, that doesn't insult your intelligence or have you searching for something that isn't there.

A well tempered mix of pop standards and originals that are tastefully  tailored to suit the trio's strengths (if they have any weaknesses I've yet to find them - chances are I never will.)

Kate Lamont respects Phoebe Snow's enigmatic Poetry Man with a sensitive version. Less in your face than the original - there's room for both. Nice tenor solo by Sheppard and haunting percussion from Kilgore.

Pasqua, Colley and Erskine remind us what a beautiful tune Brian Wilson's immortal God Only Knows is and Parqua gives Jarrett's Bop Be - book-ended by Pasqua's Gumbo Time and Erskine's On the Lake - a six and a half minute work out.

Chillipso brings to mind cool Caribbean Cuba Libres. Erskine's drums provide the crackle as the drink meets the ice in a tall glass - "Set 'em up Joe".

What do Jimmy Webb, Glen Campbell and Alan Pasqua have in common?

Answer: Witchita Lineman. Webb composed it, Campbell paid off his mortgage with it and Pasqua adds the jazzy touch the others missed.

Sheppard returns for Pasqua's Leaving L.A. It's a two minute swinger. I'd have liked more.

Contemplation. The title is self-explanatory. Colley solos, respecting the intent of the composer (Pasqua). Pasqua is very much in Bill Evans' mode

Erskine earned his keep with David's Blues. and Pasqua brought a near perfect example of a 2026 piano trio album to a close with Dear Chick (Corea?) Lance
