This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Davina & the Vagabonds @ Cluny 2, Newcastle - May 23

Davina Sowers (vocals, piano); Becca Lozier (trumpet, vocals);  Matthew Hanzelka (trombone); Graydon Peterson (double bass); Connor McRae Hammergren (drums) 

A long overdue return visit to Newcastle by Davina and the Vagabonds. It had been all of fourteen years since Davina Sowers last walked along the Ouseburn. The Cluny, Cluny 2 to be precise, couldn't have been busier with all seats occupied for an eight fifteen start. The Vagabonds line-up has seen many changes, this 2026 UK tour iteration was, according to Sowers, the best yet.

Sowers' raw vocal power, impassioned, knowing lyrics, the Vagabonds' instrumental excellence, the evening's two sets embraced jazz, blues, jump jive and rhythm 'n' blues shot through with a bucket full of soul. 

The jazz - Bourbon Street Parade and Exactly Like You - vocals by the by the band's sensational trumpet player Becca Lozier, the Louis Jordan material handled by Sowers, including Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?, the belters - I'd Rather Go Blind (wow!) and Dr Feelgood - could only be taken by Ms Sowers. Fabulous! 

The eclectic set list - Sunny Afternoon (Ray Davies and co), When My Sugar Walks Down the Street, St James' Infirmary (a bizarre audience birthday request) - offered something for everyone and every last person on the premises loved every minute of Davina and the Vagabonds. Russell
