Sunday. The last day of Gateshead’s annual jazz shindig. Arrive early in time for brunch and catch the first of the concourse performances. What do you mean you were at the late night jam session and didn’t get home ‘til 5:00 am.? This is no time to sleep and don’t forget tonight’s jam session at Hoochie Coochie starts at eleven o’clock! Peruse the programme and decide who you’ll hear on the concourse, which hall you’ll pop into, who you must catch…decisions, decisions. One thing you must do is be around on the concourse sometime around 3:30 pm. More of that later.

The best seats in the house have by now probably been snapped-up by every guitar player within one hundred miles of Gateshead. Bireli Lagrene is one of the great players of this or any other era in the history of jazz. A bold claim? Hearing him as a teenage prodigy at the Newcastle Jazz Festival (in the company of Babik Reinhardt) left an indelible impression. To tag one so young as a ‘genius’ would be to place a millstone around his neck but the temptation was there.

Ask me to define Shangri-la and I suspect I may describe it as listening to Lindsay Hannon singing Autumn in New York whilst I'm eating the Cherry Tree Black Pudding, Crushed Swede, Caramelised Apples and Green Peppercorn starter. Alternatively I might opt for Rump Steak-Frites, Garlic Butter and Dressed Leaves as the accompaniment to You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to for my trip to Euphoria although the combination of Steamed Treacle Sponge and Vanilla Ice Cream with Stu Collingwood's solo on Bye Bye Blackbird would also tickle the taste buds both musically and gastronomically.

A series of four comic dramas following the fortunes of a jazz quartet in the
remote west Highlands of Scotland.

Robbie used to be a professional jazz pianist, now he's a much-abused and 
miserable music teacher. On the edge of despair, and just about to sit down 
to a microwave meal for one, he hears a strange noise. It's a sheep farmer 
playing double bass in his bathroom.

A moving comedy about a musician who, having lost everything, accidentally
gains a jazz quartet.

CD Review: David’s Angels: What It Seems

When I was handed this CD I was told it was good in parts.  But I loved it, all of it, with its 8 rather dark love songs and 2 happier numbers.  Perhaps it’s my many years of listening to long folk ballads of murders and intrigue, which has left a mark.  The band is Swedish, and the CD has come out just when many things Swedish, such as crime stories are popular.

Durham’s Paul Edis will a busy man at this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival. He has provided charts for Jambone and is a key figure in Andy Champion’s ACV yet will find time to assemble his sextet for a late night gig on the concourse.

Northern Spirits in Hall One on Saturday evening is a major event, perhaps the event of the weekend. Two works inspired by the north east landscape form the centerpiece of the evening; the late Ian Carr (trumpeter, composer, broadcaster, writer) wrote the suite Northumbrian Sketches in the 1980s and it has never been performed by orchestra and jazz group in the north east until now and Tim Garland, who has made his home in Whitley Bay, has written Songs to the North Sky, a suite for jazz trio and orchestra.

The Northern Rock Foundation Hall transforms itself into the Jazz Lounge for the duration of the festival. For some, the space is a favourite of the three principal halls. The Saturday afternoon session features four bands and this year the theme is celebrating the vibrant jazz scene from the north of the UK and Europe.

Jazz Record Requests with Alyn Shipton

An edition of BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Record Requests will be recorded in Hall Two on Saturday afternoon. The legendary programme, recently rejuvenated by the appointment of Alyn Shipton as presenter, is a ‘must listen’ every Saturday afternoon (or evening as it has been shunted to of late thanks to opera’s pre-eminence on Radio 3). Festival artists, including Tim Garland, Gwilym Simcock and Zoe Rahman will choose their own favourite recordings and members of the audience will have a chance to make their own request. A sheer delight. Free but ticketed.
