Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jason Holcomb Jazz Ensemble @ the Engine Room (outdoors), Sunderland - June 21

© Patti
Jason Holcomb (trombone, effects); Alix Shepherd (keys); Abbie Finn (drums)

Seats were at a premium and the sun, at least for awhile, beat down upon the al fresco audience enjoying the funky sounds from the Jason Holcomb Jazz Ensemble.

In truth probably not many were there just for the music but, combined with the drinks, the pizza, the general bonhomie and the sun, which was soon to turn to light rain, the setting was near perfect.

The programme was tailored to the occasion: Summertime; Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (which seemed to last forever, and none the worse for that!); Autumn Leaves; ?; Work Song; All Blues; Blue Bossa; Watermelon Man; Soul Bossa Nova; Bags' Groove; Cissy Strut; Oye Cómo Va.

Holcomb gets an earthy sound coupled with an advanced degree in slide-ology that had the hypothetical firemen in the Engine Room on a four alarm fire alert! On some numbers he used an effects pedal that added little to his natural sound.

On the, now seemingly omnipresent, Nord Stage 3 keyboard Shepherd was very effective adding bass lines to his comping and his juicy solos.

Finn was, as ever, on the money. Not as many solos as per the norm but when she did break loose they counted!

All in all a pleasant early evening and for those of us who copped for a table with a sheltering sunshade/umbrella to protect us from the weather we got the best of both worlds. Lance
